지휘(conducting, 독일어: Dirigent)는 다양한 동작을 통해 음악 연주를 이끄는 것이다. 지휘의 대상에는 관현악, 합창, 합주, 오페라, 발레 등이 있다.
지휘자의 주요 책무는 빠르기·박자·리듬·셈여림 및 그것들의 변화, 각 주자에의 적절한 가입 지시, 표정 등을 정확하게 지시하는 것으로 되어 있다. 특히 큰 편성인 경우에는 음향적인 밸런스도 고려해야 하며, 현의 음빛깔도 통일해야 한다.
이와 같이 지휘자에 의하여 재현된 악곡의 모습은 천차만별일 수밖에 없다. 그래서 이 지휘방법을 어느 정도 체계화한 것이 지휘법이다. 지휘의 실제는 사람마다 다종다양하나, 거기에는 공통된 보편성이 있다. 이것이 지휘법 성립의 기회를 마련해 준 것이 된다.
