- 단어(單語) 또는 낱말은 스스로 일정한 뜻을 담고 있고, 자립성이 있는 최소 단위이다. 자립성이 있으므로 앞뒤로 띄어쓰기가 가능하다. 하나 이상의 형태소로 이루어져 있으며 여러 개의 형태소로 이루어진 단어는 흔히 어근이나 어간, 접사로 분석된다.
- 한국어에서는 홀로 쓸 수 있는 '철수', '책'와 같은 체언뿐만 아니라, 독립적으로 쓰이지 못하고 반드시 윗말 뒤에 붙여서만 쓸 수 있는 조사 '이/가', '은/는', '을/를'도 단어로 인정하고 있다.
